Lotus was one of the positive surprises of the 1992 season. Τhe team managed to secure the supply of Ford HB engines.

Hakkinen and Herbert were confirmed before Christmas 1991. The old 102D chassis was used for testing with the Ford engine pending technical director Chris Murphy to complete the new car, the 107.

The 107 was a simple and fast car, which was used. after the first 4-5 races, played with the old 102D.

At the wheel of the 107 Hakkinen did not managed to finish the race in France and Hungary, while Herbert finished sixth in France. Lotus took fifth place in the constructors' championship. In the drivers' championship, Hakkinen was eighth while Herbert was fourteenth.
