Mitsubishi driver since 1996, Richard Burns continued his apprenticeship with a partial programme in the WRC for the 1997 season. Mitsubishi placed him behind the wheel of the Carisma GT, which was actually a Lancer Evo IV renamed for marketing reasons, as the Lancer is sold under the name Carisma in some countries. Burns' 1997 season ended at home, at the legendary RAC Rally. On his home turf, he shone and even took the lead at mid-rally. Unfortunately, a puncture caused him to lose several minutes in SS21, and he fell just short of the podium. A bitter fourth place, but one that proved the full extent of the British driver's talent! In fact, he would take his revenge the following year at the RAC with his second world championship victory in the Carisma!
