The designation "Targa" is now synonymous for cars with a safety bar and a removable roof centre section, but has its origins in the Porsche 911 and 912 Targa, produced since 1965. The name is derived from the Targa Florio endurance race, an event in which Porsche achieved numerous successes.  

The 911 Type 964 was the first Targa to be available with all-wheel drive. It was also the last to be equipped with a removable Targa roof. The successor models were delivered with panoramic glass roof or automatically retractable roof centre section.
